How high from the ground the water heater, heater, and power outlet should be installed.
The gas that you use for your water heater and you heater as well when leaking is spreading all over the ground. Because the gas is heavier than the air, it may form a layer up to 18-inch (45-cm) high from the ground. So the permanent flame in the water heater as well as the heater should be more than 18-inch (45-cm) high from the ground. This is to avoid the leaking gas from catching fire from the permanent flame in the water heater as well as the heater.
Any power outlet in your house should also be higher than 18 inches (45 cm) from the ground.
No gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids near the heater, water heater, or any other appliance.
If you smell gas near your water heater or your heater, and anywhere in your house, turn off any electrical appliance, any light, and any fire. Get out of your house right away and use your neighbor’s telephone to call 911 immediately to ask for help from the fire department.
Understanding the water heater. The first gas knob (directly controls the coming source gas to the water heater) should be opened (the knob is parallel to the gas tube). The second gas knob (controls the directly distributed gas to the water heater) is located on the gas dial that has 3 positions from left to right: OFF, PILOT, and ON. The dial of the thermostat has 5 positions from left to right: VERY HOT, C, B, A, and HOT. Some dials can have the position of the appropriate hot water that is marked by a compact V without which the appropriate water temperature may be between A and B. Water temperature over 125 degrees F (52 degrees C) can cause severe burns instantly or death from scalds. The outer door and the inner door leave a hole through which you can see a blue flame when the tank water is being heated. When these doors are opened (removed), you will see on the left the pilot burner and on the right the pilot-follow metal tube which is next to the pilot burner.
Water Heater Troubleshooting when you no longer have hot water
1. Go to the water heater. If you smell gas, turn off any electrical appliance, any light, and any fire. Get out of your house right away and use your neighbor’s telephone to call 911 immediately to ask for help from the fire department. If not, do the next step.
2. Make sure the first gas knob is still ON (still parallel to the gas tube).
3. Turn the thermostat knob clockwise to the lowest temperature. Do not force.
4. Open (remove) the outer door and look inside. If there is no flame (the water tank inside is dark) – that is why you no longer have hot water, do the next step.
5. Turn the second gas knob clockwise to OFF. The knob is stuck at PILOT where you must slightly press it down (do not force) and keep turning it clockwise to OFF.
6. Wait 5 minutes. If you smell gas, turn off any electrical appliance, any light, and any fire. Get out of your house right away and use your neighbor’s telephone to call 911 immediately to ask for help from the fire department. If not, do the next step.
7. Open (remove) the inner door. If you smell gas, turn off any electrical appliance, any light, and any fire. Get out of your house right away and use your neighbor’s telephone to call 911 immediately to ask for help from the fire department. If not, do the next step.
8. Turn the second gas knob counterclockwise to PILOT.
9. Press this knob all the way down and hold it. Immediately light the pilot burner (on the left) with a match (or gas lighter gun). Continue to hold down the knob for 1 minute after the pilot is lit. Release the knob that should pop up and the pilot should stay lit.
If the knob does not pop up, immediately call a service technician or the gas supplier.
If the knob pops up but the light goes out, repeat from 5 to 9.
If the pilot does not stay lit after several tries, slightly press the knob down (do not force) and turn it clockwise to OFF. Call a service technician or the gas supplier.
10. Close (replace) the inner and outer doors.
11. At arm length away, turn the second gas knob counterclockwise from PILOT to ON to make the water heater work again.
12. At arm length away, turn the thermostat knob counterclockwise from the lowest temperature to the appropriate temperature.

Đồng hồ nhiệt độ nước nóng có ghi 5 vị trí từ trái sáng phải: VERY HOT (rất nóng), C, B, A và HOT (nóng). Có loại đồng hồ nhiệt độ nước nóng trên đó có ghi thêm vị trí thứ sáu là chữ V đặc đen, tức là vị trí nhiệt độ nước nóng vừa nóng đủ dùng. Nếu không có chữ V đặc đen này, thì khoảng giữa A và B là vị trí nút vặn nhiệt độ nước nóng vừa phải để dùng. Nước nóng trên 125 độ F (52 độ C) có thể gây ngay phỏng nặng hoặc chết người vì phỏng rất nặng. Cửa ngoài và cửa trong của máy nước nóng để lộ một cái lỗ qua đó bạn có thể nhìn thấy ngọn lửa xanh khi máy nước nóng đang chạy. Khi hai cửa này được mở ra, bạn sẽ thấy từ trái sang phải pilot burner và pilot-follow metal tube ở cạnh nhau.

4. Mở cửa ngoài và nhìn vào trong. Nếu bên trong tối tăm không có ngọn lửa nghĩa là máy đã ngừng chạy nên bạn không có nước nóng. Làm bước kế tiếp.
5. Vặn nút gas trên đồng hồ gas theo chiều kim đồng hồ tới OFF . Nút sẽ bị chặn lại tại PILOT. Nhấn nhẹ nút xuống (đừng nhấn xuống quá mức) và tiếp tục vặn nút gas tới OFF.
6. Đợi 5 phút. Nếu bạn ngửi thấy mùi gas, hãy lập tức tắt tất cả máy dùng điện, bóng đèn và lửa. Lập tức ra khỏi nhà và dùng điện thoại láng giềng gọi số 911 để xin sở cứu hỏa tới cấp cứu. Nếu không, làm bước kế tiếp.

8. Vặn nút gas trên đồng hồ gas ngược chiều kim đồng hồ tới PILOT.
9. Nhấn nút này xuống tận cùng và giữ lại. Lập tức thắp lửa pilot burner bằng một que diêm (hay bằng súng bật lửa). Tiếp tục giữ nút xuống 1 phút sau khi pilot burner được thắp lửa. Thả nút ra, nút sẽ bật lên và pilot burner còn ngọn lửa cháy.
Nếu nút không bật lên, lập tức gọi chuyên viên hoặc hãng gas.
Nếu nút bật lên nhưng ngọn lửa pilot burner tắt, làm lại từ 5 đến 9.
Nếu ngọn lửa pilot burner vẫn tắt sau vài lần làm lại, ấn nhẹ nút xuống mà vặn nút theo chiều kim đồng hồ tới OFF. Gọi chuyên viên hoặc hãng gas.
10. Đóng cửa trong và cửa ngoài lại.
11. Giữ khoảng cách một cánh tay xa máy nước nóng, vặn nút gas trên đồng hồ gas ngược chiều kim đồng hồ từ PILOT tới ON để làm máy nước nóng chạy lại.
12 Giữ khoảng cách một cánh tay xa máy nước nóng, vặn nút nước nóng trên đồng hồ nhiệt độ nước nóng ngược chiều kim đồng hồ từ nhiệt độ thấp nhất đến nhiệt độ vừa phải.
